3D modelling of a 15th century city gate of Rennes: Portes Mordelaises

Abstract

[es] Las Portes Mordelaises, the remains of the medieval walls of the city of Rennes, France, have been subject to several archaeological excavations until 2017. On the basis of these excavations, we were able to create a three-dimensional (3D) model of the reconstructed site as it would have appeared during the fifteenth century, including the surrounding land as well as the interior of its famous towers. Once our efforts and results were officially recognised as being of national interest by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, the Heritage Department and the French National Museums Service, we presented our reconstruction of the virtual model in an exhibition managed by the Brittany Museum entitled “Rennes, the lives of a city”. This approach to the 3D reconstruction of the site served to deepen the study of Rennes’ origins, its construction, its organisation and its historical relationship with the surrounding territories.
