[EN] Johannes Itten, Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian or Vassili Kandinsky are names that we immediately associate with the artistic avant-gardes of the first half of the 20th century, with fundamental contributions on the way towards abstraction, towards the exploration of the structures underlying the visible forms that surround us. Its ideological background ranges from Eastern philosophy to theosophy. It is difficult to find names linked to the Christian tradition of Europe in the classical historiography of modern art or architecture. It seems that this is incompatible with modernity, as if it had been definitively surpassed by it. However, although they hardly appear in classical historiography, there are other names, linked to this Christian tradition. We will refer to Rudolf Schwarz and Otto Bartning, two German architects, closely linked to prominent avant-garde architects, such as Mies van der Rohe or Walter Gropius, and to institutions such as the Deutscher Werkbundo the Bauhaus. In the historiography their names are hardly mentioned, and when they appear no important contribution is attributed to them, having been classified exclusively as mere church builders. In this chapter we delve into his trajectory, to focus on experiences that highlight its value in the context of the architectural avant-gardes of the first half of the 20th century. This chapter is part of the contents of the Seminar that under the title "Revisando la época de las Vanguardias. Apuntes para una nueva arquitectura en el siglo XXI" was held at the Polytechnic University of Valencia from February 27 to March 10, 2014.

[ES] Johannes Itten, Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian o Vassili Kandinsky son nombres que asociamos inmediatamente a las vanguardias artísticas de la primera mitad del siglo XX, con aportaciones fundamentales en el camino hacia la abstracción, hacia la exploración de las estructuras que subyacen en las formas visibles que nos rodean. Su trasfondo ideológico abarca desde la filosofía oriental hasta la teosofía. Es difícil encontrar en la historiografía clásica del arte o la arquitectura modernos nombres vinculados a la tradición cristiana de Europa. Parece que ésta sea incompatible con la modernidad, como si hubiera quedado definitivamente superada por ella. Sin embargo, aunque apenas aparezcan en la historiografía clásica, hay otros nombres, vinculados a esta tradición cristiana. Nos referiremos a Rudolf Schwarz y a Otto Bartning, dos arquitectos alemanes, muy vinculados a arquitectos destacados de las vanguardias, como Mies van der Rohe o Walter Gropius, y a instituciones como el Deutscher Werkbundo la Bauhaus. En la historiografía apenas se mencionan sus nombres y, cuando aparecen, no se les atribuye ninguna aportación importante, habiendo quedado catalogados exclusivamente como meros constructores de iglesias. En este capítulo nos adentrarnos en su trayectoria, para entresacar experiencias que pongan en evidencia su valor en el contexto de las vanguardias arquitectónicas de la primera mitad del siglo XX.
