Dark tourism is defined as travelling to historical places associated with death and tragedy. What has happened over the last 110 years; including the two world wars along with natural and man-made disasters have been feeding the dark tourism industry, generating an enormous heritage in different parts of the world. People are attracted to dark places because of their historical value rather than because of its association with death and suffering. Each traveler has different reasons for setting of on a journey, in this case, some of which may be the memory of tragedy, nostalgia, the desire to pay homage to the dead, etc. This paper will examine the origin of dark tourism, pointing out the main reasons for tourists to take this type of trip and identify new trends since COVID-19.
