The French language as a key for the students’ professional future: the example of the formation of engineers in telecommunications

Abstract

[EN] This article aims to call the attention to the importance of French in the formation of university students, as this will affect not only their academic life (because it enables the students to continue their studies in a francophone country), but also their professional life (in order to enter into the employment market). In the context of globalization –which imposes the mastery of English as an inescapable condition for work opportunities–, the knowledge of a second foreign language enhances the CV of Spanish graduates and puts them on equal terms to other European students. It also increases their chances of employment at an international level, thus making them equally competitive to graduates of other universities where the knowledge of two foreign languages is a condition to obtain the title of engineer. As an example, we shall show how students can learn French in the current Degree in Technical Engineering of Telecommunications at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), whilst at the same time we shall compare this with language learning in an equivalent institution in France.
