Environmental risk assessment of pollutants of emerging concern in the European Union

Abstract

[EN] The increasing pressure of the processes of urbanization, industrial development and the indiscriminate use of water, have caused the deterioration of the quality of the water, which has lose its capacity for being used in later uses. Urban and industrial wastewater are discharged into public waterways, which may led the increasing of organic and inorganic pollution levels, that can not be assimilate by the ecosystems, resulting in surface and groundwater contamination. In this sense, the limited efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), which are responsible of the elimination of microcontaminants, has been widely demonstrated, since these substances are not completely removed or absorbed by biological processes. Therefore, a wide range of these compounds, coming from pharmaceuticals, personal care products, endocrine disruptors, pesticides, plasticizers, organochloride and persistent organohalogen compounds, among others, escape from conventional treatments, causing multiple and undesirable effects on aquatic organisms. For the reasons explained before, is necessary to assess the risks of micropollutants in aquatic ecosystems. In order to do this, different bioassays are available to predict the effects in different organisms. In the present work, the toxic effects of five microcontaminants (chlorfenvinphos, diclofenac, pentachlorophenol, PFO and terbutrin) are studied on the organisms belonging to different trophic levels, such as the marine bacterium Vibrio fischeri, the alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, embryos of the fish Oryzias latipes and two mammalian cell lines, in order to carry out an environmental risk assessment due to these five compounds.
