Characterisation of demand and proposals for energy-saving measures in a hospital: case of application to an University Hospital of the Generalitat Valenciana

Abstract

[ES] The current high energy consumption means the release of large amounts of pollution into the atmosphere, facilitating climate change through the greenhouse effect, as well as affecting soil and water. Although this is a topic that has been discussed for many decades now, it is only in 2012 that fixed targets are set to meet, among which is the reduction in the energy consumption of energy-intensive buildings, as may be the case for hospitals, by increasing its energy efficiency. In the present ‘Fin de Máster’ job, the electrical consumption behaviour of the General Hospital of Valencia has been studied and characterised, based on direct measurements of the transformers connected to the hospital complex’s network connection. The data were collected thanks to the installation of network analysers in the hospital’s electrical installation, and it was possible to measure a multitude of variables practically in real time. A series of scripts, or order files, have been developed, which automate the processing and representation of the large amount of data obtained, thus reducing the complexity and time taken to study the behaviour and trends shown in consumption. This data processing has been carried out through the analysis of main components (LSA), a qualitative statistical technique that allows the information to be synthesised. Finally, once the behaviour and trends in consumption have been analysed, and the causes of which have been identified and specified, a brief literature review is presented in relation to the possible energy saving measures (MAE) applicable to the type of building in question, including a small study of the economic viability of a possible MFA.
