Impact of the chronotype on sleep parameters according to working hours

Abstract

Table of Honour of the Faculty of Higher and Postdoctoral Studies, 2015-2016 The purpose of this submission is to assess the association between chronotype and sleep difficulties in connection with working hours. To this end, 116 workers from the health network of the city of Quebec completed the Horne and OSTBERG chronotype questionnaire (MEQ; (1976) in addition to completing a sleep diary over a period of 2 weeks on a daily basis. Participants were compared according to their working hours (day workers n = 43; night-time workers n = 73) and according to their chronotype (morning n = 37; neutral n = 59; evening n = 20) to determine the independent and interactive effects of these variables on sleep time during the main sleep period, the duration of sleep over a period of 24 hours and drowsiness after work. As initially assumed, the results indicate that the timing and working hours have an effect on the main sleep period, but not on sleep during 24 hours, so that night workers have a period of main sleep that is significantly shorter than that of day workers. In addition, the shortening of the main sleep period after night work seems to be mainly observable among workers with a morning chronotype or neutral chronotype, a patron of results that is consistent with current knowledge of circadian rhythm and corroborates several previous studies. The fact that all workers have obtained an equivalent sleep time over a period of 24 hours suggests that it is possible to compensate for a shortened main sleep period, taking their own hands. Thus, the results obtained in this submission highlight the importance of night-time workers’ jobs, especially those with a morning predisposition. Finally, the lack of difference between groups in the level of drowsiness after work suggests that excessive drowsiness is not a problem that is limited to night work.
