A strategic and operational change management approach in the context of the advanced use of corporate Big Data

Abstract

The aim of this memory is to develop a change management approach for organisations that want to put in place the necessary transformations to take advantage of advanced big data techniques. The field of transformation chosen in the context of this memory is the exploitation of data internal to an organisation to develop a technological and organisational maturity, in particular with regard to the client orientation of its business model. The aim of this maturity development is to follow the transformation of today’s society, which is heavily influenced by the Big Data movement. The proposed approach is aimed at organisations whose technological and organisational maturity is far removed from that of the companies leading to this ‘digital’ transformation. We propose a strategic and operational methodological framework allowing organisations to carry out the transformations of culture, organisation, management and adoption of techniques to engage in the advanced exploitation of their high volumes and poorly structured internal data. The practical application of our methodological framework is illustrated in the case of a large Canadian insurance company over a period of two years. We also carried out a 9-month pilot project to test the implementation phase of strategic change management using the internal data of this insurance company. We have developed, refined and tested these approaches in several iterations in order to propose detailed methods, illustrated by actions that lead to concrete results and which highlight certain challenges or difficulties in adopting such approaches. As a result of our project, the proposed approach was adopted by the company for operational purposes.
