Abstract
This study aims to verify the effectiveness of multimodal cognitive behavioural treatment to reduce psychological distress (ie., anxiety and depression) and certain psychophysiological symptoms (i.e. erectile difficulties, insomnia and fatigue) in men who have undergone radical prostatectomy for localised prostate cancer. An A-B multi-baseline experimental protocol with direct and monitored replications shall be used. Six participants complete the processing. Time series analyses carried out on indicators of psychological distress suggest significant improvements in after-treatment for two of the participants in at least two variables and which continue to be monitored by three months. Non-parametric tests carried out on the self-assessment questionnaires generally support these results. On the other hand, benefits in terms of fatigue and erectile functioning appear on the follow-up three months. In sum, the intervention as administered in this study seems to be effective for some patients, but could be more effective if emphasis were placed on sexual functioning, which is the main problem in this population.
