Education for Sustainable Development: social sciences and students in debates.

Abstract

the complexity of the concept of sustainable development and the actions to be implemented and the theoretical, practical and political controversy it raises make it more up-to-date and necessary than ever to build a posture that combines environmental, social and demographic, economic and technological, historical and geographical, political and legal, cultural and ethical dimensions. The bringing together of knowledge and know-how specific to the social sciences is a necessary contribution to the construction of such a posture, which is itself a prerequisite for the training of the citizen. In this book, the educational and epistemological research team of social sciences (ERDESS) presents the first phase (2007-2009) of research funded by the Swiss National Fund. A sequence of teaching and learning on the theme “Populations, Societies, Climate Change” has been implemented in classes in Switzerland of primary and secondary degrees in Romance. Methods intersect with qualitative and quantitative approaches to analyse the different types of data collected. The results highlight the potential of debate practices to encourage students to build and mobilise social science knowledge, to decide and act with a view to sustainable development.
