For or against universal income

Abstract

The idea of a universal income is increasingly discussed in the public debate. Its principle is to pay to all members of a community an equal amount, without control, without consideration and on an individual basis. Some see it as a pillar of the welfare state of the 21st century, while others think that it is a utopian and costly project. The aim of this book is to inform debates on universal income by intersecting economics, philosophy and political sociology. How can universal income be justified? What would be the winners and losers? Is it financially sustainable? Does the universal income risk weakening the social protection systems currently in place? What effect on gender equality? What is the link between employment and social protection? What can we learn from experiments? Should a step-by-step strategy be put in place? Which political coalition to drive reform? The authors gathered here do not have the same answers to these questions.
