The Concept of Prudence in "don Quixote"

Abstract

Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1992. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the characters of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza with respect to prudence. Not much has been written on this subject by critics. However, prudence was a topic often treated by writers and thinkers before, and contemporary to Cervantes. In this dissertation I examine many of these writings in order to develop an idea as to what constituted prudence at the time of Cervantes' writing of his masterpiece. The fundamental aspects of prudence are explored in the first chapter, most of which is devoted to the thought of Aristotle and St. Thomas. These two philosophers lay the foundation on which the Medieval and Renaissance notion of prudence will be based. In the second and third chapters, which treat Don Quixote and Sancho, respectively, the thought of these two, along with that of others, is used in my analysis of the two protagonists. I do not claim any direct influence by any of these sources on Cervantes, although such influence may have existed. Rather I use that sources to construct a theoretical or historical background regarding the topic, against which Don Quixote and Sancho can be examined. From this examination I will draw several conclusions. U of I Only Restricted to the U of I community idenfinitely during batch ingest of legacy ETDs
