Medical authority at the limits of life and death: A psycho-sociological analysis

Abstract

The article attempts a scainsociological understanding of the relationships of doctors and nurses within the Intensive Treatment Units (ICU). The ICU survey sought to understand how nurses justify their attitudes in relation to the dominant group of doctors. By recording the power relationships, as determined by the predominant medical reason, the emergence of the phenomenon of ‘internalisation of performance’ on the part of nurses/three (the one-sided attribution of causes to the internal characteristics of the subject of the observation) seems to be the result of activating the norm of ‘internalisation’. ‘psychologisation’ (the justification for behaviour and internal characteristics) conceals the powerful context in which the realities of ICUs are built and conceals the social benefits behind its activation.
