Book review: Thomas Piketty Capital in the 21st century

Abstract

Mr Piketty’s peer-reviewed book has become one of the bests of the world, and shortly since its publication, reviews expressing both positive (and even enthusiasm) and highly critical reviews. The latter refer, to some extent, to the theory of Mr Marks, whose work is used by Autor in the title of the book and partly in research. The topic of this publication is the creation, division and ownership of capital (rich, wealth) in the modern world economy, especially in highly developed countries. The key research task undertaken by Piketty concerns changes in the creation and distribution of wealth and income from the 18th century to contemporary times and lessons for society and the state today and in the future. In this context, the problem of economic and social inequalities growing in the global process of capital multiplication, which remains in the hands of a narrow group of capital holders, is important. There is a growing need to counter adverse phenomena, which encourages the development of the social state, a new type of public policy and the use of strong instruments to redistribute income.
