Crocodile in the Maya Yokoto’an region. An anthropological approach to the current nature of the environment in Tabasco

Abstract

In the context of identity studies, it is interesting to move closer to the importance that the environment – and everything that integrates the complex – has had over time. This work is a rapprochement with the study of the importance of crocodile in the Maya world. It sets out, for example, the functions that that animal performed as part of the geographical environment in the production of identity. A number of uses are observed: as part of the sacred landscape, its close relationship with certain dioses or sacred beings, that is to say, in the purely religious sphere; and also its use in diet and ‘remedies’ for certain conditions or illnesses. What is interesting to carry out a study based on a specific element, the crocodile, is that we find information from the prehispanic era to the present time (archaeological sources, cores, colonial sources, ethnographic sources).
