Youth generations - an attempt at conceptualization

Abstract

The aim of the text is to show the discourse about youth generations, which have been present for at least four decades in social sciences and humanities. The temporary casing used in this text is not accidental. Since the mid-1960s, young people have become a social phenomenon of Teilkultur. The macro-social perspective adopted in the text required the reference to selected theoretical concepts in the field of sociology of young people (Parsons, S.N. Eisenstadt, J. Habermas), which show ‘young people’ as a distinct phase of life and ‘the period during which an Indian history intersects with History’ (Kłoskowska, 1987). A philosophical (Ortega y Gasset), sociological (Mannheim) and anthropological (M. Mead) reflection on the generational problem was also presented. The text also refers to a number of controversies built around the concept of generation, including its overly “overall” and “collective” nature, media creation and “marketing” of generations. Does the generational problem in the traditional sense cease to exist, become ‘post-modernised’? The text does not provide a clear answer, but merely outlines the research field and raises fundamental doubts as to the ‘scientific’ nature of the term.
