Where these data come from
Heated from ballasting? Strategies to “suppress” religious intimacy in the New World’s robbery

Abstract

In this article I present some basic modes of “domestication” of the religious otherness – “idolatrous” polytheism, in this case – in the conquest of the New World. Selected examples: Cortés, Bernal Díaz del Castillo, José de Acosta and Bartolomé de Las Casas, were used in order to determine the key patterns of capturing the indigenous religions, starting from appropriating the other, then establishing of radical difference and finally its denial – not through assimilation but through discovering the inner foreigness. I use the notion of “extraordinariness” (Le Goff) as the main analytical category. My theoretical perspective is Wolfgang Welsch’s proposal to reject the ‘old’ way of thinking in the terms of own – foreign and replace it with the opposition of close – distant.
