Lorenzo Loto Five paintings by Lorenzo Lotto: documents and assumptions about the dispersion of paintings from the Holy House of Loreto/Five paintings by Lorenzo Lotto: documents and hypothesis about the dispersion of the paintings from the WARDROBE of the Holy House of Loreto

Abstract

The contribution presents some new documents on Lorenzo Lotto that could broaden the knowledge of the Veneto painter and his works that remained in Loreto after his death. Some accounting remarks make it possible to make new assumptions about the delivery of the Friends of Jesi, the artist’s latest altar painting. An inventory of the cloakroom of the 1563 Apostolic Palace in Loreto mentions with certainty at least seven paintings by Lorenzo Lotto, who went to the sanctuary after the oblation of 1554. Finally, in 1580, two ‘paper paintings’ were sold to the Governor of Santa Casa Vincenzo Casali, identifiable with two boxes from Bergamo’s tarsie. It is thus possible to reopen the question of the last sentence of the Veneto master in Loreto and identify traces for the dispersion of some of his works. The paper presented some published documents on Lorenzo Lotto able to increase knowledge on the Venetian Painter and works maintained in Loreto after his death. Some notes of account allow us to advance new circumstances about the delivery of the Amici Altarpiece for Jesi, the last altarpiece of the artist. An inventory of the WARDROBE of the Apostolic Palace of Loreto, dated 1563, fees at least seven paintings by Lorenzo Lotto, passed to the Sanctuary after the artist’s obstruction in 1554. In 1580, finally, two ‘pictures on paper,’ identified with two cartons of marquetries from Bergamo, were sold to the government of the Holy House Vincenzo Casali. It is possible to Reopen the question of the last period of the Venetian master in Loreto and identify the traces for the dispersion of some of his works.
