People of Islam. Funeral ritual and life stories at the Maqbara in Pamplona

Abstract

We presented some results of the osteoarchaeological study carried out on the remnants exsmoked in the Maqbara de la Plaza del Castillo de Pamplona. Out of the 172 Islamic sepultures identified, 177 skeletons have recovered in different conservation states. Demographically represents a natural population of pre-acunal societies, where almost half of the population died before reaching adulthood. Pathological data have made it possible to recognise different diseases of infectious, metabolic, congenital and tumour origin, among others. Violent injuries, which in five cases resulted in the death of individuals, all of them men, are highlighted. A complex population is recognised with African, local and mixed markers. The identification of intentional dental manipulations, preferably in women, makes it possible to recognise originally African cultural markers, which are also present in genetically local populations, a clear sign of the encryption of some of the indigenous population.
