Mediated listening: a resource for social action

Abstract

On 19 September 2017, an earthquake struck the central part of Mexico. 60 buildings collapsed and around 200 people died. A group of brigadists composed of audio engineers and sonidists, using their audio equipment, attended the search for survivors in the buildings collapsed by the accident. In that process, they experienced a possible epistemological break-up, turning mediated listening into a resource for social action. Considering the usefulness of their team in a chaotic context, they extended the boundaries of their profession, the use of technology and the manipulation of their body and listening to the common good, re-learning the habit of listening. To present the case, the most pro-positive work of audio rescue technology, the sociological theoretical framework of acoustic communication and the mediation and transformation of the body through the use of technology have been reviewed. To frame this transformation of listening, we include testimony of the intervention of one of the members of the Rojos Brigade and a review of some printed and audio-visual materials about and the individuals and organisations that emerged as a result of these efforts.
