Dental attention to children in the rural area of the town of Araraquara-SP

Abstract

Introduction: Caries’ disease is a public health problem and much has been done to monitor its installation and evolution. In areas of difficult access, treatment and communication facilities are scarce, further increasing the severity of the disease. In this way, addressing individuals located in these regions is a challenge for the health professional seeking the well-being and quality of life of the population. Objectives: Promote oral and general health for children and gestants of the Bela Vista settlement, the rual area of the city of Araraquara (SP) through educational, preventive and curative activities and offer differentiated education to students on the graduation course. Methods: Curative procedures were carried out at the site’s own health station, including endodontics, surgery, dental restorative, eventdontia and prevention, all carried out by academies of the 7th and 8th series, supervised by the teacher in charge. Medical treatment took place every Wednesday, in the morning and afternoon periods of approximately 10 children on a daily basis. Clinical preventive activities were carried out through the application of sealants, fluorine, supervised brushing and prophylaxis. Educational activities were carried out weekly at home, with the presence of children’s caregivers, when clinical examinations were carried out, instructions on diet and oral hygiene, supervised brushing (children received hygiene kits) and referral for restorative treatment when needed. Results: In the period from March to July 2009, 70 children received a total of 339 curative and preventive clinical procedures at the health station. Home education procedures provided children and their family members with motivation and knowledge about basic care for general health promotion and the procedures to be adopted for maintaining oral health. All the students involved in the graduation course have gained experience with the particularities and culture of the local population as well as the differentiated treatment conditions, which are important for their professional and human training. It can be observed that the children assisted have largely had the mouth cavity appropriate to the health conditions and that they and their family members are aware of the attitudes to be taken to promote and maintain oral health. Although the assisted population has acquired good conditions and knowledge about oral health, there is a need for effective action of the programme, as awareness and changes in habits still need to be stepped up.
