Sexual and reproductive health and adolescent maternity programmes in La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina)

Abstract

The stigmatising view of maternity in adolescence and the interest in controlling sexuality on the part of the health sector is recent and different for men and women. We know that the gender and age categories, as cultural constructions that refer to basic inequality relationships, which are crossed by particular economic and political structures, are rooted in a social field that is predisposed to strengthen naturalising stereotypes and domination relationships. The study focuses on the general issue of the recognition of rights present in sexual and reproductive health programmes targeting poor adolescent women. The cut highlights the contrast between the regulatory framework and the meaning of motherhood for adolescents. To this end, national health programmes, the Pcia. de Buenos Aires and the municipality of La Plata are analysed and speeches obtained in interviews conducted with 20 teenagers living in poor neighbourhoods in the city of La Plata.
