Fair, faithful and proagonisms: Jokes and placeres in The Victorial of Gutierre Díaz de Games = Jousting, Festivities and prominence: Joy and Pleasures in Gutierre Díaz de Gama’s El Victorial

Abstract

This work aims to analyse how two basic emotions, joy and pleasure, are reflected in a 15th century chronic, namely the Victorial of Gutierre Díaz de Games. As this is a horse biography, its pages give a particular view of the two emotions mentioned above. For example, chronic provides a lifeline of those circumstances in which the gentlemen were supposed to be in a position to experience pleasure and joy. These circumstances range from courtesy festivals to victories in battles, including love and friendship. The purpose of this article is to analyse how two basic Emotions like joy and pleasure were expressed in a fifteenth-century Chronicle, namely El Victorial by Gutierre Díaz de Games. Since the Chronicle is a chivalric biography, its pages highlight a particular vision of joy and pleasure. The Chronicle offers a variety of circumstances in which Knights were meant to experience pleasure and happiness. These circumstances range from court festivities to victories in battles, as well as others involving love and friendship.
