Where these data come from
The monetisation of Paiter Suruí’s social life

Abstract

The article looks at the mechanisms of stability and change in indigenous communities triggered by the current development process. The search was carried out between the Suruí, whose territory is located between the states of Rondônia and Mato Grosso in Brazil. These people stand out by their ability to interact with various groups in society. With a past marked by logging and encroachment of settlements on indigenous land, the Hodierna reality of Suruí combines trajectories and timing that combine and discombine from relational intensification with non-indios. The methodology chosen was the case study, with participating observation and application of interviews. The results point to the current and surrounding process of monetisation of the social life of Paiter Suruí, but consider that market rationality is not one-way. It not only adheres to traditional activities, such as crafts, but also interacts with indigenous logic, the mould of which is the cultural fair, a place where the sociability of the Paiter and the reproduction of markets within indigenous villages are mixed. Finally, the article in fact highlights Suruí’s experience of reciprocity through the practice of donation prior to contact with non-indigenous people.
