Where these data come from
Urban violence, insecurity and tourism in the ‘Soil City’ (Christmas/Rn/Brazil)

Abstract

The topic of violence and its link with tourism is the subject of this research, the main thrust of which were: investigate whether there is a link between the areas of highest incidence of homicide violence at Christmas and the areas with the highest tourist flow in the city. Secondary data used to compare spaces where homicide violence predominates in the capital and tourists’ areas. The analysis found a quantitative subsidy in data obtained mainly from the Waiselfisz Map of Violence (2000, 2010 and 2014) and Hermes, Alves and Brandão (2015). It was also sought to understand the sense of safety/insecurity perceived by visitors in local tourist spaces in order to capture part of the dynamics of urban violence marked by theft and theft, thus carrying out a survey of victimisation with tourists carried out by means of questionnaires. Also through an interview with the representative of deatur/Christmas (Specialised Delegate in Turist Attendance), it was sought to listen to what public authorities have to deal with the growing violence in the city and how specifically with regard to the tourist, he has been facing the problem. According to the findings of the study, the research found that the areas claimed to tourism do not coincide with those in which homicide violence prevails, and that the city favours certain areas which, in turn, are targeted by investments and public policies aimed at equipping them with infrastructure and public security.
