Ethnographic atlases of Poland. Prolegomena

Abstract

One way to explore and present the different manifestations of the traditional culture of larger areas is to present them on maps and then to interpret the ranges presented. The establishment of an ethnographic map requires certain rigours to be met already at the stage of drafting the questionnaire and field studies. A set of these well-defined requirements, including but not limited to the taxonomy of mapped cultural elements and their chronology, are referred to as a cartographic technique. Knowledge of this technique makes it possible to assess the suitability of already ready-made maps for further research and for the processing of their contents. It can also help researchers to develop new maps. The ethno-geographic method allows the origin of cultural characteristics/elements to be inferred from the configuration of their ranges. The interpretations of the maps lead ethologists to clarify the origins of traditional culture in Poland by showing, belonging to the Western European cultural province and the border with the north-east and Carpathian provinces on Polish soils. The traditional culture of Poland is reflected in several Polish and German atlases.
