Gender equity as a learning unit at university

Abstract

This research describes an educational experience in the subject of gender equity, with a learning unit targeting university students in various fields, in online mode, over a six-monthly period. This learning unit, which is delivered for the first time at university, is a way of promoting gender equity and combating the problem of violence by denaturing it and understanding its own role both in reproducing inequality and in change. The aim of this work was to analyse the learning reflections carried out by the 18 students who participated in the course, through three inductive categories: patriarchy, violence and equity, built on the units of the course. To achieve this, a collection of the final sections of its tasks was carried out. The analysis of those sections, identified as ‘learning reflections’, tells us that the students consider the patriarchy to be a historic construction, that we have learned to see gender-based violence as natural and that equality and equity are not the same. Students were also found able to link these concepts to situations in their immediate contexts, and were able to recognise them as factors of change.
