Uber and urban mobility in the metropolitan geography of Guadalajara: boom and decline

Abstract

Technological advances in digital have facilitated access to virtual space or cyberspace; a non-physical place where countless situations in everyday life are happening. Here, transport network companies are transforming the traditional practice of urban mobility in the main cities of Mexico. This letter disputes Uber’s influence on daily travel, its incursion, rise and subsequent decline in its initial conditions in its transport service. The work makes methodological use of content analysis and quasi-graphic practice, consisting of participating observations, formal and informal interviews and netnographic exercises in the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara. The results suggest that we are experiencing variations in the exercise of automobile use, through complex hybridisations of the modus normalis and this new transport management option, which does not discourage the practice of motorised urban mobility.
