The Child: oscillation of the south and discharges of the river Camaná-Majes

Abstract

The department of Arequipa during the event ENSO 1982-83 suffered one of the most devastating droughts in its history with other departments of the Peruvian South Sierra, a drought which severely affected the economy of the area. As a result of this event, the occurrence of ENSO events with hydropluviometric deficits in the south of our country is often associated. However, during the 1972-73 ENSO event, floods occurred, on the contrary, which affected road and agricultural infrastructure even in departments of South Peru such as Arequipa. This work analyses the performance of the discharge regime of the Camaná-Majes river, one of the most important and representative rivers in the department of Arequipa for a registration period from 1950 to 1991. Seeking to establish whether there is indeed any association between the ENSO events and variations in the hydropluviometric regime in the area under study. During the ENSO 1982-83 the Department of Arequipa and others of the Southem Sierra of Peru suffered one of the worst routes of the history, which strongly affected the regional economy. After this event, it is common to associate El Niño phenomCJEU with hydropluviometric deficits in Southem Peru. However, during the ENSO event of 1972-73 there were, on the counter, floods that affected the agriculture and transport infrastructure, not only in the North Coast of Peru but also in the southem sectors. In this paper, I intend to analyse the discharging rates of the Camaná-Majes river, one of the most important and representative of the Department of Arequipa. To do this I has seen the runs 1950-1991, taking to establish if there is any association or not between the ENSO events and the hydropluviometric variations in the area studied.
