Violence in the experience of older women in social assistance centres of reference

Abstract

Violence against older people is a phenonymous within the current ageing process, which occurs in different ways, and is therefore difficult to identify depending on the cultural context in which it is embedded. The subject of this article is to make visible the logics and motivations involved in gênero violence against elderly women in the social assistance reference centres (CRASs) in Aracaju. Qualitative research developed through the partnership between the NEPIMG and the Municipal Council for Women’s Rights (CMDM). Different documentary and empirical sources supported the results, prioritising focal group sessions with older people to contribute to the evaluation of policies and programmes related to the care of older people. The types of domestic violence against the elderly are psychological, physical and property, health care, fear of the cornerstone of family life, among other things, contribute to inhibiting reports of episodes of domestic violence. The rule-maker notes that care for the elderly is the responsibility of the family, society and the state, which suggests looking at the centrality of the family, with the state providing support.
