Where these data come from
And that’s how do you eat? Interculturality and family meals

Abstract

Family meals are a ritual common to many cultures but unique in how they are parametrised in each of them. Each of them is governed by non-explicit rules which, by sharing the same culture, are known to everyone. However, when someone from a different culture takes part in such a meal, misunderstandings and cultural shocks may occur as a result of a lack of knowledge of these rules. These uncomfortable situations can be solved by working interculturality in the E/LE classroom. The activity we are proposing is based on a reflection on one’s own culture to compare it with the target culture, followed by a fun simulation where our students will have to put themselves in the shoes of a Spanish. It lasts approximately 120 minutes and is designed for level B2, although it is adaptable to any other level.
