The purple and escarlate house: study on sociorreligious aspects of domestic violence experienced by seven pentecostal women. 2018. Dissertation (Master’s) – Post-graduate programme in Religion Sciences, Ponteau Catholic University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizon, MG

Abstract

The aim of this study was to understand domestic violence experienced by seven pentecostal women and to identify the socioreligious aspects present. To this end, we use qualitative exploratory research consisting of bibliographical reference and field search. About the bibliographical reference, focus on the three thematic axes of our search: domestic violence, gênero relations and pentecostalism. We use structured questionnaire and individual interviews for the field search. Our interviewees were identified from the criteria: experience of domestic violence, civilian majority, pentecostal and freely accept to participate in the search. Seven pentecostal women were interviewed, a contingent of our field search. From literature studies and field research, we note that domestic violence is characteristic of gênero violence. Gênero relations show inequalities marked by power and domination, stemming from socio-cultural constructions. Based on the data collected, we note that the socio-economic profile of the interviewees is consistent with the Brazilian predominance of poverty and limited formal study. In domestic violence, the main perpetrators are spouses. There are various forms of violence and a repeat incident over decades, with a predominance of the maintenance of the matrimonial relationship. Offspring experience domestic violence in their homes. About the religious aspect, we see that the religiosity of interviewees permeates speeches and guides cotidians. Fears, dreams and future prospects of a social, economic and religious nature are adsorbed by beliefs and the faith that women teach. Pentecostalism as a guiding medium for religious practice is characterised by interviewees as beneficial in various aspects and contexts. However, we do not identify in the speeches of interviewees elements of a religious nature and pentecostal membership that favour more equitable gênero relationships and actively contribute to the cessation of the domestic violence they experienced.
