Abstract
Guatemala is a country with a geographical variety, with a territorial area of 108.889 km. It is located in the Central American area, sharing borders with Mexico, to the north and west; with Honduras and El Salvador, in the direction; with the Atlantic Ocean, to the north-east and, with the Pacific Ocean, to the south. Other distinctive features of the country are linguistic, cultural and social diversity, as well as the ethnic composition and spatial distribution1 of the population. Of the eight million inhabitants of the country, 60 % live in rural areas, 90 % of which are of maya origin. Guatemalan territory is shared by two major cultural groups: slopes and indigenous people. (The term ‘ladino’ is used to refer to the massils).
