Development of Transversal Skills at the University of Murcia: Strengths, Deficiencies and Proposals for Improvement

Abstract

The development of transversal skills in higher education is of particular interest because it is linked to the social and employment context. The inclusion of these competences in the university curriculum is irregular and complex. Teamwork, social interaction, ethical and social engagement and emotional control are among others key competences of professionals of our time. The aim of this work is to ascertain the extent to which these four transversal skills have been developed and to identify the strengths and weaknesses in their training process, and finally to analyse the proposals for improvement provided by 1137 students from the last year’s degree from the five fields of knowledge of the University of Murcia. The CECTGRA questionnaire is applied and replies are analysed in a mixed approach that alternates the use of SPSS v23 and ATLAS.TI 7. The results indicate the need to improve skills development; teamwork is the most developed, with emotional control in the opposite pole, with significant differences between the areas of knowledge. The strengths identified are grouped in relation to the student itself, the environment and structure, and the weaknesses and proposals for improvement around the institution, school and classroom.
