Abstract
Actors of urban renewal use discourses on the degradation of the popular neighborhoods that reinforce the stigma of these places and their inhabitants. Meanwhile, we enhance the “inhabitant” and his memory, whose valorization is a must, a necessary step before any change or rehabilitation. In this context, artists are called to restore meaning in the period of urban upheaval: they participate to the creation of a new neighborhood identity and to the removal of the stigma. These art projects that emphasize the memory of the inhabitants have an ambiguous role: how operating a memorial work in places that will be erased?
