“Since when the shark has been a mammalian?!?!” The pragmaticalisation of the questioning sequence since then

Abstract

This work covers non-temporal jobs in the questioning sequence since when in statements such as “Since when the shark is a mammalian?!”, often expressive jobs in dialogical contexts. Without any particular literature study, such cases can be characterised, as part of a cognitive approach, as pragmatic (Dostie 2004), i.e. displaying the subjectivity of the speaker (Traugott 2010). Since then, when it has become a discursive marker (Traugott, Dasher 2004, Dostie, Pusch 2007) both in phrastic structures (‘Since when the personal opinion of a politicist obscure is true?’) and as a word sentence (‘The verb peinturer exists? Since when? ”). On the basis of a grammar emerging from the speech (Hopper 1987), we describe the use of this formula on the basis of an analysis of a body of statements found on websites that gather the views of internet users. In these clearly subjective jobs, since it has played the role of a marker of mismatch, this concept lends itself, in speech, to contextual modulations. It is these variations that will allow us to propose a first typology of subjective jobs since then as a mismatch marker: (I) expression of surprise (‘Since when must he prove his innocence?’), (ii) expression of disapproval (‘Since when should his freedom of expression be demonstrated by criticising those who supported and promoted you?’), (iii) staged the incongruity (‘Since when the fatalities consume water?’). Our analysis also takes into account the characteristic features of such jobs, namely rhetorical issues and irony. Particular attention is paid to jobs such as ‘Since when a prosecutor has called himself a witness?’, analysed in constructive terms as suggesting an anti-model, i.e. a discrepancy with the doxic representations. Our reflections also include an observation of the expressive punctuation phenomena (“And since when you cannot wear black in summer?”), which are seen as traces of prosodium change and therefore indicate pragmaticalisation.
