Abstract
The work analyses Latin America’s contemporary electoral systems for the parliamentary elections from a comparative perspective. The elements are analysed constituencies of the electoral system (electoral formula, average size of constituencies, voting form, electoral threshold, size of legislative chamber) considering political consequences for voters’ representation, governance and power. It concludes by pointing out that the influence of electoral systems is undeniable today. in election results as essential aspects of political systems, and in the degree unity and discipline of political parties, but this influence is exercised in combination with other factors, in particular the specific policy context of the country concerned. The latter it should be taken into account when planning any reform to make it fit to achieve the objectives pursued.
