‘The montaraces’. Women in the former Tuyu in the mid-19th century

Abstract

In the ancient Tuyu in the mid-19th century, in the world south of the Salado river, the life of the Gaucho was not easy, of course not easy for his colleague. The geographical geography of the site with abundance of mountains and Pajonales has clearly influenced customs and customs, which led to the very specific characteristics of the same society. A prelection site of not a few scrubbers who were looking for refuge, time and forgotten, were looking for the bonaerian campaign, fleeing the law. This vision was not missed in the eyes of the justice system, which I certainly applied to them, what I call ‘THE LEY OF THE GRANDES MONTES’. However, what place did women occupy in such an inhrospite rural world? in view of the unprecedented perception of judicial officials of the justice system applied: ‘There is no one who does not come to his own forces, to wait for that of the others!’. Do the woman then apply ‘her force’ and thus exercise her rights? The way of life in Tuyu, in the middle of the 19th century, and the campaign in general, meant that women should be aware of it. It was common for the man to leave the post to go to work elsewhere, sometimes absent for several days, or for longer if he was taken over by force, whether to go in military campaigning or armed conflict, even to cover ‘the border’ with the Indian. At these times of full and obvious vulnerability, women should have the necessary tips to overcome situations of danger. The ‘montaraces’, as the inhabitants of the former Tuyu were almost dispectated, did not stand by ‘waiting for the force of another to be defended’, but the opposite, when she had the opportunity, maintained his position and fought to defend himself and not only with the pluma...
