On history, memory and patrimony in southern Brazil – Azorean monuments in Porto Alegre and Florianópolis

Abstract

This text explores the history of the Azorean immigration monuments in the cities of Porto Alegre and Florianópolis. The Azorean migrants and/or migrants when moving to the south of Brazil brought with them their way of life and beliefs and organised themselves socially and economically in spite of the natural difficulties of the 18th century. In the 19th and 20th centuries other migrant groups arrived here, including Germans (1824), Italians (1875) and Japanese (1908). When these communities completed or complete their birthday of arrival in Brazil, their leaders alone or together with local, regional and national governments organised commemorations and many have won monuments in honour of their pioneers, definitively marking these dates through the use of marble, bronze, cement or iron, among other materials. In addition to the intention of the tendering group, documents, plants, mock-ups, photographs, memories and rememorations of events were searched for the purpose of the development of those monuments. The speeches spoken on the day of the inauguration, photos and newspapers were also reminded, giving us the scale of their importance to the community that created them. In the drafting of that text, we have sought, in the history of the Azorean group, to reaffirm its importance through the monuments built in its tribute, and also to question the timeliness of those two places of remembrance as the material heritage of those two cities.
