Abstract

In this article, we will rebuild the rebellion of the San Javier Mocovies in 1904, characterised at the time as a ‘Indian Malon’, that is to say, as an outbreak of a group of ‘wild’ with destruction plans. On the other hand, we consider that this conflict should not be seen as an isolated episode, but as part of a broader context shaped by the problem aboriginal in the period of consolidation of the national state. We understand the concept of ‘rebellion’ as a complex process in which political, economic, social and religious aspects are at stake, linked to both a protest against state impositions and a milenary movement. We will analyse this rebellion from the press of the time, in which we identified different interpretations of it, as well as various perceptions of the indigenous issue that arose between different sectors of mayor. In this article we reconstruct the Rebellion of the mocovi people from San Javier in 1904, which was granted at that time as an encroachment of a group of savings, which were only to loot and destruct the town. On the contrary, we consider that this was not an Isolated confrontation, but part of the context of conflicts between Aboriginal people and the national State during its consolidation period. We stand the concept of ‘Rebellion’ as a process that political, economical, social and religious aspects, in a way that allows us to think of this protest as a resistance against the impositions of the State and as a millenarist movement. We will explore this Rebellion based on the information available on the contemporary press, where we identified different interpretations of the Aboriginal conflicts within different sectors of the wider society.
