Abstract
Partial results are presented from a study aimed at understanding the values of young people completing secondary school. This article analyses its policy orientations along the following lines: prioritising freedom or equality, self-positioning on the left – right ideological scale, support for democracy and the post-materialism dimension (Inglehart, 1990). 60 % of young students prioritise equality over freedom. Left positions (24 %) are more widespread than in the general population. 38 % is located on the right and a similar proportion at the centre of the ideological scale. The majority (55 %) doubts whether democracy is the best form of government. Only 28 % say it is the best. The positioning of young students in continuing materialism – postmaterialism helps to explain their attitudes to specific issues on the political agenda.
