Abstract
In July 1938, José Ortega and Gasset published an adaptation of their short trial entitled ‘On pacifism’ in the English review magazine, The Nineteenth Century. In its Anglo-Sajona version, the trial was a criticism of the political practice of pacifism, while at the same time developing the issue of distortions and perversions that accompany the public opinion of the outside world. As a stark example, Ortega would point out the case of the Spanish civil war, noting that in the modern world this public opinion could manifest itself as an active and incursionary force in the actions of sovereign countries such as Spain.
