HISTORY OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF CHILE: FROM THE CRISIS FROM PEOPLE’S UNITY TO THE MASS REBELLION POLICY

Abstract

This article analizes the political proposals put forward by the Chilean Communist Party immediately alter the 1973 Military Coup until the failure of their policy of Rebelión Popular de Masas (Popular Rebellion of Masses). It deals with the circumstances and events that led to the Party’s abandonment of its traditional policy of flexible and far reaching alliances and its attachment to the so called “institutional path”. From then on the Party combined its traditional method of mass mobilization and the recourse to the use of political violence in order to defeat the military dictatorship. As a result the Party fell into political isolation right at the time when democracy was restored in Chile, and it concludes that its political failure in the late 1980s led to its current political isolation.
