Abstract

I have been asking for years why juvenile delinquency instigates so much. And I am mindful of whether such social unrest will be a response to the increase in juvenile criminal acts, or perhaps our frustration over the unsuccessful social and legal containment of such acts, or rather a genuine concern for young people themselves. Our discomfort seems to be based on the reactive and hasty view of juvenile criminal acts, rather than on an in-depth analysis of the root of these acts, which would bring them closer to their life histories, broader knowledge of their families, their social and cultural contexts, and their personal characteristics. Of course, such a rapprochement would lead us to compromise our social tolerance, our methods of understanding and tackling juvenile delinquency as a product of society and to adopt a solution beyond the sharing of guilds and convictions. Of course, such humanisation of crime would be tantamount to challenging values rooted in meritocracy without social memory, in the indifferent view of the family, the master, the church, the professional, the government and other entities. Of course, understanding crime from the child or young offender would make our habit more indifferent to the needs of other social groups.
