Connected and mobilised students: The use of Facebook in student protests in Chile

Abstract

Considering the relationship between the new digital media and the political action of young people, the aim of this article is to describe the use of Facebook during the Chilean student movement in 2011, through an analysis of the content and text of the Facebook page of the Students’ Federation of the University of Chile (fah). In 2011, Chile experienced a series of mobilisations, perhaps the most important in its recent history, where young people were the main players in the debate on education. During these events, Facebook was one of the social internet networks most widely used by participating organisations. In the case of the fah, this student group used Facebook mainly to call for protest actions, to highlight the achievements of the movement and to identify its opponents. However, most of the content published was generated by traditional media, showing that at the communication level the usual strategies of social movements are also intertwined with new, more innovative practices. The vision of technological determinism is therefore rejected because it does not reflect the complex phenomena that characterise the development of student and youth movements.
