Ethnonyms: revealing ethnostylems? Milestones for a comparative literary glossary

Abstract

This proposal for a communication takes place in the session of the colloquium dedicated to La Francophonie. Here we will discuss the interaction between the differential lexicography influenced by the interpretative semantic on the one hand, and the literary semmiotic of French-speaking texts on the other. Our reflection will be based on corpus analyses to investigate the extent to which ethnonymes, which generally refer to ‘non-State linguistic and cultural groups’ (Dubois et al. [1973] 1994: 186), they are ethnostylems revealing heterogeneous writing. In the three novels analysed here, the reference francais (Poirier 1995: (26) mix with the languages of adstrat: in the Patriarch Jujubier ([1993] 1998) by Sow Fall, Senegal, is in wolof; malinké and bambara, Allah is not obliged (2000) from Ivorian KouRomania; the Lebanese dialectal Arabic in Le Rocher de Tanios ([1993] 2004), from Maalouf, Franco-Lebanese. We will look at the functions performed by these ethnonyms in creating a literary reference universe, as revealed, inter alia, by an analysis of their treatment, perceived as the position of authors with regard to the constraints that these words, at a semiotic level, impose on their statements. By processing, we mean both the graphical and even spelling of the lexies themselves, as well as the management of their rehearses and glossairistic cotext. Through this study, we will look at what method of structural analysis of ethnonyma treatment would make it possible to compare the relevant distinctive features within a system that is sufficiently opposive to pave the way for a comparison of the scriptural strategies implemented around these terms by the authors of the corpus, in order to ask some elements of the answer to this question: what tools for a comparative ethnostylistic?
