Abstract

The migration, from the object of marginal research in the field of humanities and social sciences, as pointed out by Abdelmalek Sayad, rises in the present era to the object of fundamental research to question the social link and the relationship with the other, where the other, bearer of an objective difference with his arrival and his permanence, brings with it social stories that must be recognised, re-elaborated and in-depth, together with the structures that characterise the person: social structures, traditions and religions, political and mental structures. The erroneousness of migrants, the transmigration of people and social histories between worlds and cultures, involves changes and at the same time mutual fertilisation of diversity that enriches each other. However, error requires a meeting space between different sensibilities and cultural heritages, partly denied by a society that is afraid of otherness, where the encounter becomes a narration of two or more otherities. The theme and experience of storytelling, which has become a significant element of contemporary culture and social practice where more people share a story, is a fundamental approach to the relationship with different cultures. If social research cannot therefore neglect and ignore the social history of people, there is no observation and understanding of human relationships that can at the same time underestimate the spaces through which people pass and live, considering the relationship with ourselves and the other in the context of the relationship with the space of life. In the two contributions presented in this section the narratives are in fact used as tools to open a point of observation on some aspects of the phenomenon of migration starting from the individual lives of migrants. The collection of narratives – integrated with ethnographic paths – brings out very interesting insights not only on the life paths of individual migrants or on the categories of meaning they use to give meaning to the migration experience, but also on migration in general. The use of narratives is also problematic, questioning the real cognitive contribution of this source and its ability to communicate the characteristics of the context in which the interviewee acts and the interactions that take place in it.
