Ceferino Namuncurá: a ‘virtuous’ indigenous

Abstract

In the midst of the violent conquest process of the Patagonia, which led the Nation project in the subordinate or definitive exclusion of indigenous peoples, the Salesian Congregación intervenes with its evangelisation plan, based on the representation of the indigenous ‘infiel’. Ceferino is positioned as the idealised crystallisation of a mysionary plan that sought to multiply the Catholic faith through indigenous vocations. The biographical texts for children about Ceferino Namuncurá, published by the Salesians, build through the image of the ‘infiel converso’ a model of scoring and titre. Through a set of texts, including illustrated stories, we will analyse in terms of ‘aboriginality’, the construction and deconstruction of its figure. In the civilisation process, this construction reinforces or blurs Ceferino as a model of ‘virtuosism’ and ‘santity’.
