Abstract
This study was realized with original ccijp data’s on careers of new press cardholders (1990 and 1998). Centered on the journalists of regional and local medias, it also provides a comparison with the entire of each cohort. Journalists working in regional and local media, younger and more masculine than those of entire cohort, have a higher vocational training, supported by an accumulation of experience in newsrooms. However, this proficiency does not guarantee longevity in journalism. While careers are generally a little more stable in the local medias, their duration tends to be reduced because, after 11 years of activity, over a third of journalists have left the files of the Commission card. Journalism would be rather a passage than a profession involving a lifetime.
