Analysis of the music repertoire in school manuals

Abstract

One of the concretes of critical pedagogy in music education is the use of a repertoire that incorporates student preferences. This study addresses the presence of such a directory in the school manuals most commonly used today. To this end, 15 textbooks were accessed, analysing 985 different pieces. The variables used have been the historical period or music gender, the style within the urban popular music repertoire, the author’s seniority and the associated teaching proposal typology. The results indicate that urban popular music has little presence in manuals (8.20 %) and does not match students’ preferences. Moreover, the teaching proposals associated with this repertoire are mostly related to hearing and history and are therefore not conceived as items for interpretation.
